Definition of Aperient:

Aperients are mild laxatives that promote the natural movement of the bowels. Examples of these herbs include Psyllium Seed, Linum Seed, Fiber (Soluble and Insoluble), Rumex, Foeniculum, Taraxacum and bile [Brammer BOTM744].

Aperients (L. aperiere, to open) increase or hasten intestinal evacuations, which excite moderate peristalsis, giving soft movements without irritation: magnesia, manna, sulfur, tamarind, almond and olive oils, fig, prune, oatmeal [Culbreth1927, pp 43-44].

A mild agent that helps to promote a natural elimination of the bowels rather than provoking them forcibly [Sanchez BOTM680].

Stool softener (not a laxative) [FairyFile].

Assists in bile production and moisture for release of feces [Palmer2004].
